Planning with plants
As an amateur gardener you have never had so many plants at your fingertips, the range of choice is tempting, the species and variety almost endless. But to succeed with your planting scheme you must have a clear plan of what it is you are hoping to achieve. Are you trying to soften the hard landscaping of the garden? Do you want to introduce a splash of colour as a focal point? Are you striving for year round evergreen foliage? Or do you simply want to create dappled shade in a quiet corner of the garden?
All of these things and more are possible with a well-planned planting scheme. One simple method to consider is to divide your plants into three key categories, feature plants which have attitude and make a real statement, evergreens to ensure permanent foliage and plants which add colour when in season.
At our Plant Centre near Eaglescliffe we have a range of plants which meet all of these requirements. A comprehensive collection of rare, large and exotic plants ideal to create a feature within your garden. Choose the large dramatic leaf form of Phoenix Palm and Gunnera, alternatively the slender and elegant form of Bamboo, or the resplendent bark of Eucalyptus and Silver Birch. Our evergreens are equally wide ranging, from the broader leaf varieties of Laurel, Ivy and Flax, to the more traditional coniferous forms of Yew and Cypress. When choosing plants for colour consider whether they will be seen in sunlight or shade, this can make a dramatic difference to the impact of their flowers and foliage. The blues of graceful Iris and Hydrangea, the golden yellow of Evening Primrose and Viola, the deep red of Tulip, Dahlia and Gladioli. All can add brilliant splashes of colour giving life and vibrancy to your garden.
