Some perennials are evergreen and retain their foliage throughout the year but most die back in the colder months. However, below ground the roots are alive and well, and new growth will appear in the spring.

Amsonia has beautifully blue star-shaped flowers during the Spring and in Autumn the foliage turns to yellow. Amsonia grows best in shade in cool moist conditions. Amsonia can grow up to 36 inches tall, is easy to care and genrally not bothered by pest or disease.

Dianthus

Dianthus is either annual or perennial. It is suitable for rock garden or edging plant that self-sows if the flowers are allowed to set seed. It will bloom through the first Autumn frost if the faded flowers are deadheaded. Deadheading is the removal of faded flowers by cutting or pinching them off. Some varieties of Dianthus are fragrant though some have no fragrance at all. The height depending on variety from 2 to 5 inches tall. Mulch the root system in the winter to stop the shallow roots from freezing.
